How easy is it to rely on God? I can’t count the number of times that he has had to show me just how weak I am in order for me to rely on his strength once again. What’s so odd is that the feeling is so refreshing; it’s a shock that I act like I don’t want it more. God’s love is amazing; it’s indescribable to say the least. Once I get another taste for this goodness, I just want more.
I’ve had plenty of time to reflect upon my life recently. I’ve made a lot of mistakes, and posting it openly for all to see it was no easy step. And naturally, it brought up a lot of things in my past that I really didn’t want brought up. Needless to say, it became quite the hindrance on me. Over the past two weeks, I’ve been dealing with my past, and how to forgive myself for the things I’ve done. But there remained one fundamental problem: I was relying on myself to get past everything.
I have this nasty habit of trying to handle things on my own. When I recognize that my past sins are causing me to lose focus and get drawn down, I tend to try to take care of it myself. But I recognized something last night: I was unable to sleep, so I read through some scripture, and I finally just understood it. It wasn’t as though God was speaking to me verbally or anything. I just finally understood the truth about it.
It’s not only that God is the only one who can pay for sin – he is also the only one who can forgive it. That’s why forgiveness is evidence of someone having the Spirit – because without God’s grace in one’s life, there is no way to truly forgive in the first place. Let me clarify what I mean…
You cannot do anything about which you know nothing. For instance, I can’t be given the tools to knit and be told to knit, because I have not learned how by someone who does. Likewise with everything, even forgiveness. How can we forgive anyone if we have not been forgiven first? But even still, we cannot truly forgive anyone without God’s graciousness in our lives that drive us toward forgiveness. And that’s why it’s such a problem for us to try to handle anything on our own, even something as fundamental as forgiveness – I was relying on my own strength to forgive myself when I wasn’t even prepared to accept God’s forgiveness for me.
Paul wrote, “As the Lord has forgiven you, so you must forgive” (Colossians 3:13b). I just had a problem with forgiving myself instead of another. But that’s the beauty of it – the simplicity is profound. I can’t forgive myself on my own strength; it must come from him.
So now I am released from the bonds of guilt that held me down. Of course I can’t deny my past, lest I make the same mistakes in the future. But I’m not held down anymore. I’m free to live and grow, without the guilt and the shame. Jesus has taken them from me, and now I am free.
Now I can get carried away.

I don’t know many things. I don’t know much about science or history, I don’t know much about botany or archaeology. To be fair, I don’t know much about theology. All too often have I expected myself to have a perfect defense for any theological argument I could get into; likewise have I expected the same of others. But so often, all we have to rely on is our own experience with God.
I had heard a story of a man who was not the kind of man I would strive to be. He was a mature man who slept with girls who had barely turned 18. He was an alcoholic and got drunk almost every night. He was emotionally abusive to his children and ex-wife, and he shut himself away from his family. Then he found salvation and his life turned around. He never touched alcohol again. He frequently tried to reestablish connections with his ex-wife and his children, but was unsuccessful. He finally got a chance to meet with his immediate family, all nonbelievers. When they talked to him, they began to mock him for giving his live to Christ. He was not a theologian. He was not schooled. He had only been going to church for a couple weeks. These were well-educated people in his family that all had reasons to not believe in God.
But the point of the story is not simply the example this man gave – it is much more profound than that. As the story goes, this man’s family began to make more fun of him because he didn’t know facts about Jesus’ life. He didn’t know that Jesus only lived 33 years. He didn’t know that Jesus only spent three years in ministry. He didn’t know that Jesus fasted for 40 days in the desert. He just dimply didn’t know about Jesus’ life. But that’s not what stopped his family dead in their tracks. When they were hurling all these insult at this man, he stopped to think for a moment and simply responded, “You know…I don’t know anything about Jesus. But I do know what He’s done to me.”
This is the beauty of testimony. You can have all the theology in the world to back up your points, but if there is no heart in it, and there is no personal change in it…what’s the point? Consider the Samaritan woman at the well in John 4:7-26. It says, “A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, ‘Give me a drink.’ (For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, ‘How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?’ (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, ‘If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.’ The woman said to him, ‘Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.’ Jesus said to her, ‘Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.’ The woman said to him, ‘Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water. Jesus said to her, ‘Go, call your husband, and come here.’ The woman answered him, ‘I have no husband.’ Jesus said to her, ‘You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.’ The woman said to him, ‘Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.’ Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.’ The woman said to him, ‘I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things.’ Jesus said to her, ‘I who speak to you am he.’
So here we have a Samaritan woman who basically knows nothing of God. She is a sinner and has had five husbands, and she is shacking up with her boyfriend. She’s just a woman getting by on her life without God. Then Jesus comes in and stops her. He reveals her past to her. She has no knowledge of this man who has just told her about her life. She didn’t even know his name. All she knows is that he knew how sinful she was, and this Jew came to spend time talking to a Samaritan…so she goes and shouts, “Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?” And we’re told that all in the town came to Jesus.
So what’s the point? “Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman's testimony: ‘He told me all that I ever did.’” It’s not about getting a perfect testimony. It’s not about detailing your theology to a point. You know what it’s about? “This is what He’s done to me.” That’s the point of your testimony. Not just to share it among other believers so that they can know you better. Of course it’s good for fellowship, but that’s not the point of it all! The point is that God gave YOU a testimony. If you get knowledge, then great. If you get revelation, then great. But what you have is your own, personal testimony. You have what Christ has done to you and through you. And that is what will show people the true power of God. Not your arguments.

There are times when I get to thinking that I’m doing okay with myself. I hear all the chatter around me about self-worth and self-actualization. I hear all the jabber about finding happiness and not having troubles to deal with. I see people with smiles on their faces, money in their wallets, and loved ones on their phones. I get caught up in the storm of happiness and start to think to myself, ‘maybe I’m getting it right this time.’
Sadly enough, we lose track of reality. We get so entangled with all the goodness around us that we don’t have the urgency to stop and realize just how useless we are. To be honest, I hate happiness, simply because it gives us a chance to forget just how much we need God. Do you realize how you probably only pray when you (or somebody you know) is in need? Do you even stop to realize just how imperfect you are and just how great God is in keeping you alive right now?
I had an interesting talk with a friend the other day. He told me that he believed that God wants us to be happy and comfortable. Not that God wants us to be pained or to struggle, but that true faith means a person isn’t struggling with relational problems or financial problems or physical problems or happiness problems. I was talking with another friend tonight who said that she used to think along the same lines. How can this be?
First, look at Job. Scripture tells that Job was “upright and blameless, a man who feared the Lord and turned away from evil,” and yet he had everything taken away from him. All his livestock, property, servants, children – even his very health. And even in his deepest misery and pain, and with the pressures of his wife and “friends” telling him to just curse God so it would all end, he “fell on the ground and worshiped. And he said, ‘Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.’” He was so miserable that he cursed the day he was born.
Now you tell me – how does Job’s story fit with those who tell you that God wants us all to be happy? Yeah, God did want us to be happy. He gave us the entire world and everything. He was here to walk with us and talk to us and love us. That’s Genesis 1 and 2. But then something happened in Genesis 3. We sinned. We told God that death and misery was better than all the things He had given us. We tested His word and learned, the hard way, that it wasn’t worth it.
Oddly enough, God still sees fit to bless us daily with happiness. We just don’t care to thank Him for it, most of the time. Think of all the things you have. You probably have clothes. You probably have access to food. You have access to a computer and internet. You have access to clean water and a hospital. You have people in your life who love you. You have a roof over your head and walls to protect you. You have so much…and yet, we still feel the need to want more.
Imagine, for a second, that you’re one of the homeless in Bolivia, Ethiopia, Africa, or anywhere else in the world. Imagine that your mom died giving you birth and you never knew your dad. You’re just out on the street with a group of people that you’ve known your whole life and you all just scavenge together. Most of the people you know are addicts and dying. And all you have is a pair of pants that are far too big for you and God. You learn about Him by hearing someone preach about him once a month around your area, and you grow with Him by praying. You don’t have a Bible. You don’t have clean water. You don’t have a reliable source of food. Nothing. And yet, how could such a person still be satisfied?
Our problem, as North Americans, is that we have it TOO good. I don’t care how much pain you’re in from your own earthly loss. First, I’d have to ask if it was ever as bad as what Job lost. Secondly, I’d have to ask how much it really affects you being satisfied in God.
Now I do need to let you know, that I am not the prime example of someone that professes satisfaction in God with my whole life. I’m a whiner. Since October, my leg has been aching, and it’s only getting worse with time. But the point isn’t to not whine – the point is to be happy with what you have. God is more than good to you. Do you give him that credit?
I challenge you to ask yourself how you would feel should you be put into Job’s shoes. Imagine yourself without a house with all your family dead at once and no money or belongings or clothes or anything. Would you still be satisfied in God? Fortunately, you’ll likely never have to go through that.
But for those times when it seems like you should be happy, or that you deserve an easy life, or that it’s okay to expect God to deliver things to you, just remember what you deserve. And remember to have the same heart as Job – that God is worth your worship, no matter how little you have on this earth. Because even the air you breathe is more than you deserve.

Just a warning, this is a LONG one, so buckle up, and plan on spending a good five or ten minutes reading this.
"I don't know who I am anymore," is probably one of the most frequently uttered phrases I've heard in the past few days. So many of us, myself included, were so sure about who and what we were only a couple months ago. Then we come to a campus like this where we are constantly tried and tested and speculated and measured and poked and prodded...we don't even recognize ourselves anymore.
Identity is possibly one of the most important things for a person to form. How can we live if we don't know who we are? We're more than just beings that simply react to stimuli. We're living, thinking, loving, hating, moving, and changing people. And no two of us are the same, especially on a small campus like this.
This isn't something I can really tell you how to fix. This is nothing that anyone can do for you. This is you and all you. But, although I can't tell you the answers, I hope and pray I can shed a little light on some fundamental aspects of really developing yourself as a person and as a follower of Christ.
First, really define what you believe. Do you even really love God? Do you even really know Jesus? Do you even truly have faith in him?
Something that just absolutely kills me is when people say, "Oh yeah, I'm a Christian," but then when it comes time to give some up that matters...they feel like they've lost a part of themselves. They feel as though God asked them to betray themselves, and so they feel hurt and angry at God.
But here's what we don't understand--God does tell us to betray ourselves. In fact, he commands it! Look at Matthew 10:37-39: "If you love your father or mother more than you love me, you are not worthy of being mine; or if you love your son or daughter more than me, you are not worthy of being mine. If you refuse to take up your cross and follow me, you are not worthy of being mine. If you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give up your life for me, you will find it."
Jesus didn't say, "Just be comfortable and call me your Lord." He tells you, "Deliberately hate all things compared to me. Love ME above all things, and should you have to lose something for my life, I will reward you with a life that you can not even comprehend." But what is the other side of things? "If you cling to your 'life', you will lose it."
In light of all this, I think it's much more important for you to really decide who the Lord of your life is: Jesus, whom you would rather lose absolutely everything to attain...or something else?
I had heard it put best in a quote that said, "If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything." Are you really standing for Christ? Is your life really focused on losing anything and everything you can in order to grow closer to him?
Now, before you go on, PLEASE take a few minutes to reflect on this. If you're not already willing to give ANYTHING you possibly can in order to grow closer to Christ...why not? What is stopping you? You know the 'answer' should be "yes," but why isn't it? Maybe you're afraid. Maybe you just really do love your life more than you love Christ. So here's my question to you: is it worth it?
Is keeping anything in this life worth losing an eternity with God? Well, that's something to answer for yourself. If the answer is "yes," then the rest of this post has nothing to offer you. But if the answer for you is "no," and if you are willing and ready to give it all to follow him, then hold on, because God will be stripping you of your life right and left.
So, you've decided you're willing to give whatever you can to grow closer to God. I'm glad! But what does that look like? James 4:8 says, "Draw near to God and He will draw near to you." What does it look like to draw near to God? I hate to give you a little 'list' of things you can do, but...that's what it is. I have five things in mind to tell you about what it means to draw nearer to God.
First is to draw near to God in his Word. Psalm 119:11 says, "I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you."
Look at your Bible. Seriously, stand up, go find your Bible, hold it in your hand and look at it. Now think, for one second, that God made this for you. Yes, God did love us so much that He gave his only Son to die for our sins, but...think about it.
We know that God is infinite and that his love is unfailing and also infinite. Do you know what infinity divided by two is? Still infinity. What about infinity divided by five? Still infinity. So take an infinite God, and divide his infinite love by eight billion. What do you have? You have an infinite God, pouring his infinite love infinitely into...you. So when you hear that God so loved us that he gave his only Son...you can also understand that God did it because he so loved you.
So with that in mind, God revealed his love to you, personally, through Christ and his Word--our Bible. So seeing that God gave this to you personally...would it not make sense to you to spend some time getting to know it? But is it worth it to you?
Secondly, you should draw near to God in deliberate prayer. In the Gospel of Mark, we are told that Jesus got up in the morning, even before the sun came up, just to go pray. He went to a quiet, solitary place to just spend time with God in prayer. Now if Jesus needed time to pray, don’t you think maybe you and I need time to pray as well? But once again…is it worth it?
Thirdly, you can draw near to God in the choice to worship him. Not just meaning living a lifestyle of worship, but choosing to sing praise to him. Choose to lift your hands to him. Choose to lift your heart to him. Do you know why? Because he loves it! Read Psalms 149-150. They’re short. It will not take you very long to read them. If I could be there in person, I would read them to you. God LOVES to hear us praise him! That’s what worship is. Not just a song, not just a unification of voices. Yes, that is beautiful, but that’s not praise! True praise is when you choose to sing out of adoration to him. Look at all the greatness he has blessed you with! Thank him for that!
Also, actually PRAISE Him. A person can sing as loudly and beautifully as they can, but if it’s not out of adoration, what does it mean to God? I heard it put best in that “we are not here to sing about worship, we’re here TO worship!”
Don’t let the opinions of other people stop you from truly worshiping him! If you desire to lift praises to him, what does it matter if other people see you or hear you? You’re not doing it for them! As far as you’re concerned, it’s you and God and no one else in that room.
But, I couldn’t stress this enough, is gaining Christ really worth it to you?
Fourthly, draw closer to God in giving. Malachi 3 talks about how Israel had fallen away from God by cheating him out of their tithes and offerings. It may surprise you, but think about it – what is one of the biggest things people are unwilling to give up in order to find God? Money. So if you really feel like you shouldn’t tithe…then I’d say you might want to ask yourself again – whom are you really living for?
Now I would like to take a second to clarify something – if all this is stuff you want to do just so that you can grow closer to God and attain eternal life, just forget about it. It doesn’t work that way, and I’ll tell you why. We can do nothing to please God. We, being dirty, sinful, wicked people, have nothing to offer God that will be pleasing to him – that is, unless it is done with the right heart.
You can give and give ad give to try to grow closer to God…but are you giving from your heart because you just WANT to give to help the church? Again, you can sing and sing and sing, and you can pray and pray and pray…but what good is it? Are you doing it with a heart that desires to show God your love for him…or are you just doing it to try to pass by? Ask yourself before you go on.
Lastly, you can draw near to God in…each other – in fellowship. “As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.” (Prov 27:12)
We are called to ‘sharpen’ one another. We are called to come together in fellowship and constantly push each other into a deeper level of our faith. The writer of Hebrews says in 10:24-25, “Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another…” If you really want to come closer to God, be open to letting other people pick you apart and point out all your flaws…so that you may be “complete and mature, not lacking anything.”
I know it seems like I’ve strayed from the point enough…but when you start to develop yourself as a true follower…when you truly start to draw near to him…you will begin to see that this big question of “who you are” is already being answered. I’ll leave you with the lyrics of a song by Casting Crowns – Who Am I.

Do you ever wonder why so many people claim to be Christians, but they don't really live the life? To quote dc Talk, "The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today is Christians who acknowledge Jesus with their lips and walk out the door and deny him by their lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable."
Have you ever happened to think that just maybe the biggest reason people hate Christianity and Christians is because they look at all the hypocrites and liars and fakers that mingle in our midst...and we just accept them? If a person were to come up to you and say, "I'm great friends with Nic Laughter, and he agrees that I should sleep with you," what would you think of me? Or, a better example, if you saw a man killing somebody and stopped to ask him what he was doing, to which he replied, "I'm doing this in the name of God. He commanded me to kill this person," what would you think? You'd probably think the man was just insane, but is that any different than people who live immoral, ungodly lives, but claim they know and love Christ?
Look at it from an outsider's perspective. This person may know nothing about Christ, but looks at Christians and sees envy, abortions, killings, greed, pride, lust, etc. etc. etc. What could possibly go through said person's mind to think, "Hey, I want to be a Christian!"
Why is it that we, as Christians, have become so intertwined in the morality and ideologies of this world, that onlookers see no difference? How is it, my dear brothers and sisters, that a person can look at someone that claims to know Christ, and not even know it until they're told so? Doesn't this just disgust you?
My real question to you is this: How often have you tolerated it?
How often have you looked at a person that says they're a Christian and lies by their actions...and you had done nothing? How often have you just let it go on, thinking it's just okay? Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 5:11, "I am writing you that you must not associate with anyone who calls himself a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a slanderer, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a man do not even eat."
Tell me...if the definition of idolatry (according to Noah Webster) is "the worship of idols, images, of anything made by hands, or anything which is not God," and a person has a twisted sense of God, would that not prove said person to be an idolater? For instance, if a person thinks God doesn't care if he or she chooses to indulge in fornication, would that not dictate that the person is an idolater--worshiping something other than the true God?
Let me give you an example: an old friend of mine decided that she and her boyfriend were going to start having sex. They both claimed to be Christians. Her boyfriend, at one point, threatened my life because he thought I was trying to "hook up" with his girlfriend (my friend). These were two people who went to church every Sunday. They prayed and read their Bibles. They did community service. And yet, they did not, I can safely say, have a deep love for God. They didn't care what God thought of their actions. They looked at God as a convenience--something bigger than them that they could come to should they need to be comforted, but ignore when he told them to change.
The repercussions of a liar in our circle are endless. These people pervert the truth of our God. Jesus describes said people as "swine" and "dirty dogs." How often have you accepted them?
Take note--I am not talking about people that openly deny Christ. I am talking about people who know what the very Word of God tells them to (or not to) do, and they ignore him and move on, doing what they do. But praise God, they're still followers of Christ.
If you know someone that is like this, I pray you will share God's truth with them. You know who they are--you probably have someone in mind right now that fits the bill. Someone who says they're a follower, but they're doing something you know is wrong of them to do, but you've said nothing. I pray you would correct them. As Proverbs 12:1 says, "Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, But he who hates reproof is stupid."
But follow through with what God's Word tells us. Should said person not listen to your correction, ignore you, and say you're not in the right to tell them to change, in the words of Paul, "hand this man over to Satan, so that the sinful nature may be destroyed and his spirit saved on the day of the Lord." Have nothing to do with such a person. "Dust your feet" and move on. Should they need you in the future, THEY will come to YOU. But just by accepting an attitude that paints a wicked description of God makes you guilty by association.
If you just tolerate such a wicked heart, how will they ever change? And if they never change...where will they be when they die and face judgment? Not with God, I can assure you.
Now, there is a plethora of instances in which you need to take special consideration. I'm not saying to run with this forever. But use your logic and discern what course of action to take. But please, I beg, do not allow people to call themselves Christians when they live as though they have never heard His message. Otherwise...what does it really mean to be a Christian?
This is the difference between tolerance and intolerance. This is the difference, brothers and sisters, between "Christians" that pervert the truth of God and a defined body of Christ that loves holiness more than relationships.

The chapel service today was about gratitude. What are you thankful for? How is God good in your life? I wanted to walk up and share some things, but unfortunately, there wasn't enough time.
But after thinking about it, what am I truly grateful for? You start to think of this list of things to be grateful for: family, friends, school (well...probably not that last one), etc. But what is there to be truly grateful for? I began thinking about it.
Life will never be perfectly blissful. There will never be any point in our lives where we can look at everything and be pleased with everything--at least not when we're looking with our own eyes. My body wants to complain about certain things. My nature is to point out all the things I want and to ignore all the things that I have. But that's not looking at it from God's perspective--the perspective we should be having.
So, as I continue, my list goes out to how thankful I am that I have the greatest friends in the world. I do have a great family, and I do attend a great college. I'm also thankful for my guitars. I'm thankful for my computer and my printer. I'm thankful for my books and I'm thankful for the numerous times in my life that I could have died, but God saved me. Then I had to pause for a moment.
God saved me.
Do you truly understand how profound those words are? That I am a wretched, worthless, useless, hopeless, powerless man. And a wonderful, priceless, unlimited, hope-inspiring, powerful God--the God of all creation--saved me. That he even could, out of love, sacrifice himself...to save me.
From realizing that, being born in a sinful nature, I rightly deserve to be stripped of my life on earth and cast into an eternity of unbearable, indescribable torment. I've deserved that from the very beginning of my life.
Instead, what do I have? I have life. I have air to breathe and food to eat. I have clothes to cover me and I have shelter to protect me from nature. I have the ability to walk and talk and dance and sing and feel and smell and see and hear and read. I have the ability to love my brothers and sisters, and the ability to be loved by them. I have a family that, after 20 years, still loves and supports me. I have friends that support and love me. I have music and books and a computer and the internet guitars. I have the ability to earn an education and do something with my life. I have a dirty, downtrodden world that doesn't know Christ...and I have a call to proclaim it to them. I have a future and hope. I have joy and love. I have so much.
And here's the one that tops them all: I have God.
I have the One that saw me in my pathetic state and could have, rightly and justly, cast me into the depths of hell. But he didn't. He saw me and loved me. He took on human flesh and became my sins. He became a perfect sacrifice for my debt and set me free. He lived and died for me. He was risen for...ME!
Why, my God, do I get so confounded by all the things You have given me? Why, oh sweet Saviour, do I frequently forget that I have you? This body will die, and this life will end. My possessions will break and fall, and my family will all die. My brothers and sisters will end, and some of them will leave. My music will cease to be, and my senses will dull. Oh what I would give to be stricken of what I have. What I would do to understand, fully, what it means to have nothing but God...and thus, having more than the whole world. How my heart has broken time and time again, to see people profess a god of prosperity and health and comfort. What has come upon our body to do such a thing? To misrepresent our Lord and Saviour as one who just wants this temporary life to be comfortable and easy while children around the world die of starvation and AIDS and persecution. When a five-year-old child can die in a puddle of his own blood because he will not deny the God that promises life.
How could this happen? How can this go on? How can we not be utterly disgusted?
What am I thankful for? I think the question should be "What am I not thankful for?" If I can find a single answer to that question, I pray you would slap me and call me the most selfish person you know and cast me out of your fellowship.

This word, strangely enough, is only found in two books in the entire Bible – 71 times in the Psalms and three times in Habakkuk. But have you ever tried to figure it out?

From these words come the belief that 'selah' is a musical direction to the singers and/or instrumentalists who performed the Psalms, which was the hymnbook of the Israelites. If this is true, then each time 'selah' appears in a psalm, the musicians paused, either to take a breath, or to sing acapella or let the instruments play alone. Perhaps they were pausing to praise Him about whom the song was speaking, perhaps even lifting their hands in worship. This would encompass all these meanings—praise, lift up, and pause. When we consider the three verses in Habakkuk, we also see how “selah” could mean to pause and praise. Even though Habakkuk was not written to be sung, Habakkuk’s prayer in chapter 3 inspires the reader to pause and praise God for His mercy, power, sustaining grace and sufficiency."
So, really, when you’re doing your reading in the Psalms and you see that word, the writer is really challenging you to stop just singing the song and to really reflect on the Lord. But is it any different today? How often are you worshiping with music? Now how often do you really stop and think about what you’re singing? How often do you really mean what you sing?
To give you an experience I’ve had recently, we sang the song “Your Grace Is Enough” for worship sometime last week. I stopped worshiping for a second and looked around me. And what did I see? I saw many people with arms raised high, singing to God, praising his name and rejoicing in him. Beautiful it would be if that were the case. In reality, I saw many people singing this song, but their lives didn't reflect the words - his grace is not enough for them. Many people I personally know were singing this song to God, and yet were unsatisfied with their lives. They weren’t truly rejoicing. They were merely singing.
That’s why I so love the song Heart of Worship. The chorus rings, “I’m coming back to the heart of worship, because it’s all about You, Jesus. I’m sorry, Lord, for the thing I’ve made it when it’s all about You, Jesus.” Because worship is more than just a song! Worship is not just raising your voice and your hands…true worship is lifting your life and your soul. That's WHY we lift our hands. Not because we feel filled with the spirit and we like to - we do it because it's symbolic of lifting our lives - our bodies and our souls - to God as an offering. We are giving ourselves to Him. THAT is true worship.
I wish I could hug you as I tell you this. I wish I could embrace you as your brother and ask you with the deepest of love, "Have you been making it just a song?" Ask yourself though: Have you been singing something that you don’t truly believe? Dare I say…have you been lying to God? He knows your heart. So I urge you, brother or sister, whoever you may be, examine yourself. Don’t let yourself just sing the songs. Don’t just enjoy the worship. Acknowledge that the words you are singing are thoughts and statements to God. So make sure you really think what you’re singing. God knows if you’re truly worshiping...or just lying.
So go, my brother or my sister. Go and spend time in worship. But really, selah. When you’re worshiping, SELAH! Stop, pause…reflect. Test yourself and your worship. Because if your praises don’t ring true throughout your life…they were never true to begin with.
(Just to give you a more full picture of my friends, many of them have gotten over this problem. From what I can tell, it seems as though they have stopped making it just a song, and have truly come to worship from their hearts.)
Do you really understand what it means to endure through whatever God leads you to? Do you really know what it’s like to get through the storm as though it were nothing? This, in fact, is what it means to have God’s strength. Consider the words of James: “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything” (1:2-4). Why endure through hardships? Because it makes you mature and complete.
If you break down the text of this, the same word used to say “trials” in this passage is the same word used to say “temptations” and “tests” in others. So whatever you’re facing – hardships, struggles, anxiety, difficult temptations, addictions, or whatever – you need to look past the here and now and see what’s at the other end: growth, strengthening and perseverance, so that you will become more of the man or woman that God has in mind for you to become.
Now I know, it will still be difficult, whatever you’re going through. I understand more than you would think what it means to feel as though your life is about to end. Not that you think you’re literally going to die, but whatever it may be – emotional, relational, whatever – I know how it feels to have the only thing that matters to you seem to end. So I would have to ask you: what really matters to you?

Now, if God wanted your skin to be a little darker, or if he wanted your hair or eyes to be a different colour, of if he wanted you to be taller or shorter or bigger or smaller or anything different…wouldn’t he have made you that way?
This, brothers and sisters, is why it is so important to endure through the hardships. No matter how hard it gets, consider God’s perspective: You are still a child of his, and nothing will ever take you away from him. Want an illustration?
